In his article, Charles explores and reports what he considers as facts about the planet Pluto. He starts by giving necessary information about the size, distance from the sun and other planets, among several different characteristics of Pluto. Charles then goes ahead to talk about the size of the planet and how it has stirred debates and attracted a lot of controversy both to the general public and the scientific community. For instance, the author first talks about how planet Pluto was initially thought to be the ninth planet and the most distant from the sun. Choi then comes on to state that more information had been discovered including the planets actual size, which was slightly wider than earlier thought, and a variety of the surface features on the planet. This information, he claims, was discovered and reported by NASA in 2015. The information written by Charles is based on a recent finding by the most proficient and skilled scientists in the world, this means that it is mostly factual although sometimes contradictive and unsure. A good example is his version of the planets formation and origin which is based on a hypothesis. A lot of theories for the same exist, but he sticks to his and believes it is accurate since it was reported by NASA. He has a perfect title for this article since most of the detailed information revolves around the title, though a bit fancy, it still fits1 the article. The facts he writes about are accurate and up-to-date according to the 2017 NASA reports. According to the reports from their research, Pluto is extremely cold with temperatures ranging from -375 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and because of its far distance, little information is known about, they rely on pictures taken their New Horizon spacecraft. The following is a report from a similar source as Charles. Pluto remained undiscovered until the year 1930 while it orbited in the frozen and dim outlands of the solar system. Early reports from scientists had put it that the planet Plutos size was almost like that of Earth. Further and detailed research, however, proved that Pluto is only about 1473 miles, which is an equivalent of 2370 kilometers in diameter. It has a sizeable heart-shaped feature that was unofficially named Tombaugh Regio, a name obtained from that of Plutos discoverer Clyde Tombaugh (Tate). Close photos of the heart-shaped element reveal something that seems to be a craterless plain called Sputnik Planum, a name that was also given by scientists after the first-ever space satellite. Astronauts and scientists estimate that the plain, which is mostly made of frozen carbon monoxide, is less than a hundred million years old. There are visible pits and mounds on the plain and also appears to be sub-divided into several irregular polygons. The arrival of New Horizons towards Pluto revealed more detailed information that included, Pluto has a more complex surface that is varied and has more bright patches as well as dark patches. It is covered or surrounded by a thin atmosphere comprising of carbon monoxide, methane, and nitrogen. However, in its earlier years, many of the rappers were vilified for the highly confrontational and political statements in their music. As a reader, I am able explore the landscape of popular culture where I can analyze with my own theories and explanations through the observations of other theorists and their ideologies regarding what popular culture means. I also agree with Karl Marx’s formulation of ideology and society in which he suggests, â€Å"the way a society organizes the means of its economic production will have a determining effect on the type of culture that society produces or makes possible† (Storey, pg. 4). Next plc is one of the reputed companies among the group of plcs belonging to the retail sector. The company was incorporated in the year 1982. The company is having a large collection of women wear and accessories. They have supplied the official clothing to the Paralympic and Olympic games in 2012. External users: 1. Potential investors Potential investors are those persons who are willing to invest in the organization. They are the future investors. Sometimes they knew as the lender of the organization like banks, financial institutions, etc. The main information that is needed by these users is the financial stability of the company and their growth structure. The financial stability can be ascertained through the profitability ratios and with some of the efficiency ratios. They also keep a track on the liquidity balances. Now if the above two companies are taken into consideration, then it can be found that the interest coverage ratio in Next Plc is more than the Debenhams, and it is increasing. More ratios mean more ability to pay the interest obligation. Now if the investors are willing to invest in the fixed capital of the company, then the Next plc will be safer than the Debenhams (Nextplc.co.uk, 2013). On the other hand, the debt equity ratio also is more in case of Next plc it implies that they have more de pendency on debt capital than the equity capital. From the view point of the liquidity Next plc is more suitable than the other one as both the current ratio and quick ratio is more, but the analysis of the cash flow statement of both the companies for the year 2014 reveled that Debenhams Plc repaid their loan obligation in order to reduce their financial burden. This may be helpful for the lenders when they approved the loan for the organizations (Duque, 2009).The investor may also have to follow the trend of both the business whether it is increasing and static. All this information may useful for him at the time of selecting his investment option (Annualreports.com, 2012). 2. Government Any economy of the country is regulated by the government of the respective country. They need the financial information in order to know the contraction or expansion of the business, their taxation policy, labour laws etc. Moreover with the introduction of the corporate governance policies it is the responsibility of the government to make supervision regarding the fulfillment of compliances. Here both the companies are paying their tax obligations in time and effectively follow the rules and regulations of corporate governance (Annualreports.com, 2013). 3. Suppliers and customers Suppliers and the customers are those parties who purchases or sells their products to and from the company. They are not much interested to know the profitability of the company; they give more focus on the receivable, payable and inventory management policy. As in case of above two companies the receivable management policy is better in case of Debenhams, they collected the dues from their debtors at a frequency of 11-12 days where as the Next plc collected their dues at an interval of 78 days. The payable and inventory management policy is almost in a static position for the company. So if a customer wants to get more credit facility then they should have invested in Next Plc (2013). Internal users: 4. Managers Managers are the main internal users of the information. They are the persons who take the decisions and formulate policies based on the information. For example the net profit ratio of Debenhams is in decreasing trend which is not a good sign of profitability. Managers can use this information to find out the reason behind it and as it is observed that one of the main reasons is the enhancement of the operating costs. So the management has to give focus to eliminate some part of the operating cost in order to improve its net profit. Without the financial information it is not possible for the management to maximize the profit (Allan, 2008). 5. Shareholders Shareholders are the person who makes an investment in the equity share of the company. They are the owner of the organization. They are always concern to know that how the managers are utilizing their money into the operation of the business. They give more emphasis on the profitability and liquidity portion rather than solvency and other management policies. The dividend policy of an organization has an important impact on the share price of the organization. If the amount of dividend is acceptable by the shareholders it will increase their confidence about the company as a result the share price goes up. For both the companies the amount of dividend payment is increasing but in case of Next Plc the growth rate is higher than the Debenhams. On the other hand Debenhams increases their dividend payment a bit in the year 2014 compared to the previous years in spite of having a declining net profit ratio. This situation implies that the company may pay a portion of their dividend from the retain earnings. If this is the case then it will not be a preferable condition for the shareholders. Ultimately the shareholders goal is to maximize their wealth by getting a good amount of dividend and the capital appreciation. So they can select the option of retaining or selling the ownership on the basis of the financial information provided. (Annualreports.com, 2014). 6. Employees Employees are the main human assets of any organization. They need the financial information to depict the present as well as the future prospective of the company. The information will help them in taking decision regarding their continuation with the organization. Apart from their salaries they sometimes get different benefit options and can participate in the decision making process. ESOP is one of the schemes which allow the employees to purchase shares of the company at a lower cost. All this benefit can only be given if the company is in a stage of higher profitability. So the employees are also getting concern about the profitability and the solvency position of the company in order to ensure their benefit. Conclusion From the view point of the above discussion it can be said that the financial information is very useful in each and every single segment of an organization. It is very difficult to say that which part of the information is useful for which users. In the practical world when a person is engaged with an organization or he is willing to engage then all the information which is disclosed by the organization is equally important for him. Say for a creditor it is not enough for him to know that the company is having a good payable policy (Nextplc.co.uk, 2014). It is one of the factors that he can focus but it will not be wise to be totally dependent on the factor. Question: Discuss about the Change Management Process and Structure. Answer: Introduction Change management is a process to transit individuals, teams and organizations to a desired future state. Organizational change serves to review and modify structures of management and business processes. According to Frankland et al. (2013), it is important to adapt changes within an organization. Globalization and constant innovation in business processes are forcing the organizations to evolve accordingly to survive. For example, phenomena such as social media marketing and mobile adaptability have brought huge changes in business sectors. In order to deal with those changes, the organizations must implement change and enhance the old work procedures. However, it is also important to become comfortable with the change. Therefore, the management of an organization should enhance their ability to manage and adapt organizational change. According to Quinn et al. (2012), rapid organizational change is intensely difficult because the structure, routines and culture of organizations wil l resist against any type of change. In order to make the organizational changes easy and comfortable, several change models are introduces so that organizations can use them accordingly. Among several change models, this study will shed light on most important four models, which are Prosci Adkar model, Stephen Covey model, Lewins Classical model and Kotter eight model. Prosci Adkar Model Figure 1: ADKAR model of change (Soure: Shah 2014) According to Shah (2014), the Prosci Adkar model is an objective-oriented change management model that serves to both individual and organizational changes. In this study, the application of Prosci Adkar model in organizational change will be discussed. This model helps to understand the needs of an individual during a change at workplace. It also helps to direct kind of support an organization can provide to help employees to adapt the changes. Awareness The first question rises during a change is whether the employees are aware of the need for change or not. As mentioned by Hornstein (2015), if a change is implementing and employees are unaware about it, then they will consider it as a waste of time. They will also stat resist the change. That is why; organizational awareness messages are highly important, especially if it comes from the most senior leaders of the organization. Desire The second questions that rises during a change is whether the employees have the desire to participate in the change or not. Employees who are not interested in change will show no interest in it. In order to deal with such employees, direct manager or supervisor will have come forward to provide help (Kazmi and Naarananoja 2013). For any employee they are the closest senior personnel and they understand how those employees perform and what kind of mindset they have. Therefore, through one to one conversation, managers or supervisors will be able to uncover the reasons for resisting changes. Knowledge It is paramount that the employees have the knowledge to make the change. Therefore, knowledge building among the employees is another critical task for the managers and supervisors. However, this task can be performed only after completing the milestones of increasing awareness and desire among the employees (Hornstein 2015). Knowledge can be shared through training seasons. While selecting a proper process for training, the management must remember that training is specific to the employees role in the change. Ability Another important question that rises during a change is Can the employees put their knowledge into practice? Knowing the steps to perform in a changed workplace and actually using those steps properly are very different things (Shah 2014). In order to eliminate the knowledge to ability gap, employees should be allowed to work in an atmosphere where they are allowed to make mistakes and ask questions. Reinforcement Organizations that are planning to bring changes must have reinforced methods to prevent employees from reverting to old habits. If reinforced methods are not in place, then employees will reply on their old spreadsheets instead of the new system. They will again stat resisting the change by saying the new process is excessively long and complex (Rosenbaum et al. 2016). Therefore, it is important to monitor whether the change is being sustained or not. If employees are responding positively then rewards can be awarded. If some employees are not happy with the change, then it is important to figure out whether they will need more training, coaching and reinforcement or not. Stephen Covey: 7 Habits Model Figure 2: Seven habit model (Source: Handel and Steckler 2013) This model of change management was first published in the year of 1989 and includes 7 habits of extremely effectual people. Those habits are, Habit 1: become proactive This habit states about the aptitude to manage the environment around, rather than allowing it to manage you. Habit 2: start with the end in mind According to Handel and Steckler (2013), Stephen Covey named it as the habit or personal leadership. This habit helps an individual to achieve his aims and goals. If an employee can concentrate on relevant activities then he will be able to build a platform through which he will become productive and successful. Habit 3: fist thing first According to personal aims and goals, it is necessary to organize and implement activities. As mentioned by Cameron and Green (2015), habit 2 is the mental creating where habit 3 is physical creation. Habit 4: think positive This habit is called as habit of interpersonal leadership. Interpersonal leadership is paramount characteristics as it helps to carry out a work by using co-operative efforts with others (Jacobs et al. 2013). Habit 5: request first to appreciate and then to be understood This defines the habit of interaction, which is tremendously powerful. According to Handel and Steckler (2013), Covey explained this habit in a simple analogy which is diagnose before you prescribe. Habit 6: synergize Covey calls this characteristic as innovative collaboration It automatically surrounds all other behaviors that enables and encourages employees to grow. Habit 7: Sharpen the motto This habit is described as self-renewal process. It includes all the behaviors that encourage a person to grow and enhance its capabilities. In his recent book ,Covey introduce another habit that deals with personal fulfillment and helps other to fulfill their achievement. Lewins Classical Model This model states that using three stages an organization can implement the required changes successfully. Those three stages are unfreeze, change and refreeze. The management breaks down the existing status quo in order to establish a new way of operating. In this step, the existing beliefs, values, attitudes and behaviors are challenged. Then everything and everyone will be put at off balance (Cummings et al. 2016). This might evoke critical reaction in people which is the ultimate goal. This will motivate the employees to seek out a new equilibrium. Without this motivation, it is impossible to execute a meaningful change. However, the evolution from unfreeze to change will not ensue suddenly. Employees will take time to embrace new directions and contribute proactively in the change (Kazmi and Naarananoja 2013). The higher management of the organization will have to educate their employees about how the changes will benefit them. This is when; the organization can refreeze the process (Handel and Steckler 2013). However, the higher authority must make sure that changes are utilized and used regularly and are included into daily business. As an important part of refreeze, organizations must celebrate the success for the change. John Kotter, a lecturer at Harvard Business School and a popular change expert, introduced one of the most common procedures known as Kotters eight steps. Those eight steps are described below, Step 1: Develop urgency Higher authority of an organization must create a sense of necessity around the requirement for change. This will help the organization to spark the initial inspiration to get things moving (Appelbaum et al. 2012). Step 2: Develop a strong alliance Employees and other stakeholders must be convinced that the change is necessary for them and for the organization. This will require strong leadership skills including visible support from senior management of the organization. According to Mishra (2013), managing change is not enough as you will have to lead it properly. Step 3: Develop a vision to support the change It is obvious that several ideas and solution will float around initially when the management will think about a change (Klein 2013). It is important to link these ideas to develop an overall vision so that employees can understand it easily. Step 4: Share the vision with everyone Success of the change will depend on how the management will react after developing a vision. It is necessary to communicate with the stakeholders frequently and powerfully about the developed vision (Calegari et al. 2015). The higher authority can also use the vision regularly to make decisions and solve problems. Step 5: Eliminate barriers Some people will always be there to resist the change. Other barriers will also be there to prevent any type of change in an organization (Jacobs et al. 2013). It is paramount to figure out those barriers properly so that the management can eliminate them in order to empower the people you need to execute your vision. Step 6: Develop short-term win It is evident that nothing can motivate employees rather than success. Therefore, it is important to provide a taste of victory initially in the change process. If staffs can see that positive results are coming out because of the change, they will start responding to it. Step 7: Construct on change Kotter stated that victories because of change must not be declared too soon. Real change aims to run deep with an objective to dig out log-term benefits (Cummings et al. 2016). For example, if the change helped an organization to launch a new product successfully, then 10 more products must be launched with it in order to maximize the positive efforts of change. Step 8: Fix the changes in the organizational culture In the last step, an organization must take proper steps to ensure that the change remains constant (Shah 2014). It is also important that leaders of an organization must continue to support the changes. Conclusion and Recommendation All the models of change management are effective in their own way. Organization can use any of those models to bring change in their workplace. Each of these models is unique and has different styles and processes. Therefore, an organization must decide carefully before selecting a model. Senior management of an organization must remember that, whatever model they choose, they will have to implement each of the steps properly. Most of the times, companies implement initial steps properly and when they find that employees have accepted the change, they start to neglect rest o the steps. Sports Mascots free essay sample

The controversy over sports mascots is nothing new in today’s society. From the early 1960’s it has created an immense campaign against stereotypical sport mascot names. In articles, Indian Mascots—You’re Out, and So Sioux Me each author demonstrates how many people including Native Americans perceive certain mascots to be offensive. The authors’ first goals are to raise attention to this topic by creating pathos in their writing. Although Mark Hyman, author of So Sioux Me, has many good examples and facts, Jack Shakely, author of Indian Mascots – You’re Out, has a more credible argument. He implements pathos by describing a story that happen to him at a young age and also establishes credibility early in his article, which proves to the reader he understands the topic he is writing about. By creating emotional and logical appeals and establishing credibility, Shakely is successful and writes a persuasive and interesting article. Additionally, Shakely creates a logical appeal describing the Braves’ mascot in the 1970’s: â€Å"It was that cringe-worthy Chief Noc-A-Homa who came stomping and war-dancing his way out of a tepee in center field every time the Braves his a home run that got to me (647).† He creates a picture demonstrating that its not the Braves name that is stereotyping Native Americans, it’s the actions of the mascots that are being offensive. Colleges and universities such as Dartmouth College, changes their school mascots’ name in the 1960’s from the Indians to the Big Green so they wouldn’t offend anyone and it created uproar with their alumni that wanted to keep the original name. The last way for Shakely’s argument to be effective, he needs to prove to his readers how he is credible enough to be writing about this topic. Skakely does this by explaining how his friend of his â€Å"was president of Stanford at the time. He said the university lost millions of alumni dollars in the short run, but it  was the right thing to do.† (647) This demonstrates how he is credible because he must be a successful person and knows first handed how changing a teams’ mascot name can effect a university because a good friend of his is or was Stanford University’s president at the time. By Shakely effectively proving to his readers that he is credible, he earns their trust and the readers are more likely to agree and take his side with the topic. In the articles, Indian Mascots—You’re Out, and So Sioux Me both authors illustrate to the readers many different persuasive writing techniques. Many of these techniques include using pathos, logos, and establishing some sort of credibility. Jack Shakely, the author of Indian Mascots—You’re Out, does the best job using these techniques and writes a more persuasive article. The readers are first reeled into the topic with the pathos in the beginning of the article and at the end Shakely shows how he is credible.

As the world begins to change at a speed previously unseen, people all over the world are confused and scared of what might come next. Though today writers have taken to the internet to show the world their ideas, writers during these periods expressed the emotions human beings felt through many different genres of literature. First a man must help those around him but then the philosophy shifts to a man must help himself to gain meaning in this life. As each man struggles to find a place for himself in the world, each man is also subject to the actions of others. So each man is a master of his own destiny but yet he is also a slave to the whims of others. This knowledge scares men, women and children all over the world. Yet human beings continue to find themselves among the fear. We all find meaning for ourselves yet sometimes questions arise after we find the meaning which defines o ur life. Some questions being: Is this the meaning I wasted my time on? Is this worth all the time I spent alone? In â€Å"A Tree, A Rock, A Cloud† by Carson McCullers these questions pop out to me after reading the tramp’s so called â€Å"science of love†. The tramp in the story had his heart broken by a woman so severely he believed he could never love again. While the philosophy of love today would suggest otherwise, the tramp wandered the country in isolation, searching for his lost love and searching for love itself. He believes he has discovered the science of love, his own personal philosophy he uses to define his life in the world. He never finds the woman he held to be so dear nor does he find another woman he loves as much as her even after he develops his â€Å"science of love†. The disillusionment the tramp faces after losing his first love tears down the natural beauty of what love really is. Natural not scientific I should say. Science can t ell many things and uncover many truths but one thing science has no power over is the ability we have to love freely. This I believe the tramp fails to understand. The tramp tried to fragment love. That’s like trying to tear Mount Everest apart with a rubber mallet. It can’t be done. Nor can you apply logic to love. You cannot apply logic to something that contradicts itself as much as love does. Yet the tramp did not realize this as he tried to break down love. The tramp tells the boy he speaks to â€Å"I meditated on love and reasoned it out†. All he reasoned out was how to believe he loved something or someone. He believed love was only one love. According to his â€Å"science† you could love a rock as easily and as deeply as you loved a woman or your child. This is not the case as most would agree. I myself have never loved my iPod or my car as much as I have loved my girlfriends or my family. The tramp failed to realize many things but chief among t hem was that love comes not from what others can give you to make you happy but rather love exists when your desire to make another happy match’s your own desire to make yourself happy. An inanimate object could never return the love that men chase, so this science of love is base on false beliefs.

Garden for the Blind :: Architecture Design Essays

Garden for the Blind â€Å"Some great gardens unfold like a narrative or a piece of music as we move through them and view their carefully choreographed wonders.† â€Å"To really know why San Francisco is not Paris you must sense it.† These words, quoted by Moore, Mitchell and Turnbull and Malnar and Vodvarka respectively (in Sensory Design), are what inspired me to create not only a garden for the blind, but a sense of place and feeling for those lacking sight. While reading the selected excerpts from both Sensory Design and The Rise of the Creative Class I realized that there is more to designing a garden for the blind than simply selecting plants with specific textures and scents; it is creating an entire place, a gestalt of the senses if you will, that creates a whole sense of being in the garden. Florida refers to creativity as â€Å"the process of destroying ones gestalt in favor of a better one.† My ideal garden for the blind creates a gestalt without a visual field. Using th e kinesthetic sense of the distinctive land behind Hume, along with carefully selected auditory, olfactory, and tactile experiences, the garden for the blind will create a gestalt of its own, where even a seeing person feels they no longer need their sight. I want to appeal to the senses, but not overwhelm them. This is why I decided to divide the garden almost into sections. The only predominate sense not divided at all will be sound. Ideally, in the center of the garden will be beautiful statue, with many curves and crevices, that also has running water (a bird bath would be perfect). While this might not work on the slopping land behind Hume, hopefully at least a small structure will be feasible and provide something else for the hands to explore as well as the constant, pleasing sound of running water. When walking through the butterfly rainforest with my eyes closed, my favorite part was when I was near water. The sound of water truly made me feel like I was in a nature scene; it also gave me a sense of direction and was remarkably soothing in a somewhat stressful situation (I do not normally walk through unfamiliar areas with my eyes closed). The sound of water is a must for my garden. Also providing sound, I want to attract birds. I read that Bee Balm is an excellent attractor of hummingbirds and butterflies (which I learned from the butterfly rainforest can create quite a sensation when they land on you). Discrimination of Girls Essay

Discrimination against female children has been a topic of debate. It has been a subject of concern and sociological significance. This subject raises the cultural aspects about the role of a female child in society, what her human rights are as a human being and a number of sensitive issues.This issue is important because there is nearly universal consensus on the need for gender equality.[1] Gender based discrimination against female children is pervasive across the world. It is seen in all the strata of society and manifests in various forms.[2] As per the literature, female child has been treated inferior to male child and this is deeply engraved in the mind of the female child. Some argue that due to this inferior treatment the females fail to understand their rights. This is more predominant in India as well as other lesser developed countries. Sex selection of the before birth and neglect of the female child after birth, in childhood and, during the [teenage] years has outnumbered males to females in India and also in countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Korea.[2] There are 1029 women per 1000 men in North America [3] and 1076 women per 100 men in Europe[4] but there are only 927 women per 1000 men in India.[5] These numbers tell us quite a harsh story about neglect and mistreatment of the female child in India. Women have a biological advantage over men for longetivity and survival, however, in spite of this there are more men than women.[1][2][6] The figures above support that gender discrimination of female child is a basic facility area. Though the demographic characteristics do not show much or in some cases , anti-female bias, there is always a woman who receives a small piece of the pie. There are two main inequalities as pointed out by Amartya Sen, the educational inequality and health inequality, these are the indicators of a woman’s status of welfare. In India irrespective of the caste, creed, religion and social status, the overall status of a women is lower than men and therefore a male child is preferred over a female child. A male child is considered a blessing and his birth is celebrated as opposed to a female child where her birth is not celebrated and is considered more of a burden.[1] Therefore, [education] and health care of the female child in India is an important social indicator to measure equality between men and women. According to the 2001 Indian census, overall male-female ratio was 927 females per 1000 males. However, the 2011 Indian census shows that there are 914 females per 1000 males. During the last [decade] the number female children to male children in the youngest age group fell from 945 per 1000 males to 927 per 1000 males.[7] As per the data available there seems to be gender disparity depending on the location, as the Northern states(particularly Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh) seem to be more biased then the Southern states. The sharpest decline for the age group of zero to six years is observed in the Northern States particularly in Punjab (793 per 1000 females) and Haryana (820 per 1000 females).[8] These new figures point out that the use of new technology contributes to the gender composition. Furthermore, the availability of and access to new technologies provides new ways for parent to achieve such goals of sex determination before birth.[2] Due to the widespread use of this technology the Indian Government banned the sex determination before birth.[2] In spite of these bans imposed by the Government, the law is not widely followed. A social development report presented in 2010 to the World Bank and UNDP, found that the time a female child and a male child spends on various activities is similar, with the exception of domestic work and social/resting time; a female child spends nearly three forth of an hour more on domestic work than a male child and therefore lesser hours of social activity/resting then boys.[9] Despite progress in advancing gender equity from a legal standpoint, in practice many women and female children still lack opportunities, and support for the socio-economic advancement.[10][11] Historically, the inclusion of young girls and women in education has helped challenge gender [stereotypes] and discrimination.[12] This suggests that providing space for young girls to develop leadership skills, through education and healthy living is important. This can shape attitudes towards women [capabilities] as leaders and decision makers especially in conventionally male domains and male dominated cultures. Because of the sex preference of male children in India, female children are deemed of resources in the areas of health and education. [edit] Health In Western countries women are born with the advantage not just in [political] and [economic] opportunities but also in their ability to access health care. In the Western nations women typically live about six years longer than men.[7] But this is not true in India. There is plenty of evidence that shows that the girls are been given lesser food and health care than boys, especially in Northern India. Girls are breast fed for shorter periods, given less medical attention, fewer consultations and visit to a doctor, and in case of an emergency and or a major health concern are taken very late or not at all to the hospital.[13] Because of some culturally assigned duties, many girls miss out on the chance to improve their overall health. Miller called this as an extended â€Å"infanticide† where life sustaining inputs like food, nutrition and health care was denied to the female child. Also, female children in general are given lesser food both in quality and quantity and therefo re are [undernourished] compared to male children. This in turn leads to health issues like anemia and intrauterine growth restriction during pregnancy.[1] If in this malnourished state the woman gives birth to a female child then the possibility of the female child having survival issues, and salon nutritional issues becomes higher. The female child’s status is the product of general societal attitude towards women at large in India. Girls in India face higher risks of malnutrition, [disease], [disability] and retardation of growth and development. They have no access to or control over the resources. Their work towards raising a family and in the household chores is undervalued. Some argue that due to the culture that has been in the society for so long that a girl child and her value to the family has been undervalued for long. A popular Telugu saying from Andra Pradesh is, â€Å"Bringing up a daughter is like watering a plant in anothers’ courtyard†. Due to this understanding she is considered as a liability and outside commodity. She is deprived of good food and nutrition. According to a global study conducted by Thomas Reuter, India is the fourth most dangerous country for a girl child in the world.[14] [edit] Education It has often been argued that women’s education is the key to reducing discrimination against daughters. However, female literacy rate has risen from 15% to 54%, even as the [juvenile][sex] ratio has fallen. Furthermore, some studies have shown that educated mothers are far more â€Å"efficient† in discriminating against their daughters than uneducated mothers.[15] Other studies have shown that higher levels of maternal education decreases mortality for both boys and girls, the effect is larger for girls, thus providing evidence that higher levels of maternal education decrease gender differentials in child mortality.[16] On the other hand, there is also evidence that maternal education at the district and [household] levels is weakly associated with increases in female survival.[17] At a macro level, in general high female literacy states—Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Goa—each with relatively high female education levels have shown less discrimina tion towards girls but in the past 20 years, high female literacy has not stopped Delhi and Tamil Nadu from showing increased discrimination against female child.[18] The female child in India is often deprived from her right of an education. The basic facility of education is deprived to her. Also, even if she is in school, the number of girls dropping out of school far exceeds the boys. Definitely, this is because she is expected to help at home, either in household work like washing, cooking or help in taking care of her younger siblings. Since girls spend more time completing domestic/household chores and this increases the gap between female and male equality in rural parts of India, it perpetuates the myth that education is of no help to the girl and her primary job will be to look after the household work, get married early, have children and then raise them.[2] If this is the job she has to do, then education is of no importance to her and it is not imparted. Also, even with education and financial independence, women might not get the same rights and liberties which a man may have. It is through education in the early days of a child that we can bring about behavior changes and open doors to opportunities that will enhance their confidence, personality and career. Often in these communities, women, in particular, are considered an inferior sex and are raised to accept this belief.[1] Nearly 80% of the girls drop out from standards I to V. Out of the 100 girls that enroll in class 1 only 42 reach class V. Among [Schedule Castes] and [Schedule Tribes], many of those who live below poverty line of the 100 girls only 19 reach class V. Many of these girls work in the unorganized sectors such as the beedi industry .Two characteristics of beedi workers stand out: one, their being largely home based, and the other the predominance of women and girl children. The beedi sector represents the gender division of labor because most of the women along with girls sitting at home do the [beedi] making and boys are not involved in it.[19]
